Visit Santa
This is one of the best things to do in Lapland during the festive period, especially if you have kids. Filled to the brim with everything Christmas, this place is all you’d expect it to be – and more. Explore Santa’s workshop where the elves are hard at work, meet Rudolph and the other reindeers, and stand either side of the arctic circle line that cuts through the heart of this incredible amusement park.
Northern Light Safaris
This spectacle of nature is a sight to behold! Head far up north to give yourself the best chance of witnessing the incredible solar flare dance of the night sky known as the aurora borealis, or more commonly, the northern lights. There are plenty of opportunities to catch a glimpse of this celestial kaleidoscope during your visit to Lapland. However, escaping the towns’ light pollution will allow you to experience its marvel in its full spectrum of colour.
Husky Sledding
Husky sledding is a time-honoured practice of the Sámi people and a traditional way of traversing the Arctic tundra. There are few more authentic and exhilarating ways to take in Lapland’s idyllic, silent landscape than by dog-sleigh. Varying tour options are available depending on whether you’d like a quick taster session or want to explore the wilderness as part of a longer journey.
Lemmenjoki National Park
The Lemmenjoki National Park is situated in Northern Lapland. Northern nature shows its barest and most beautiful aspects here. The park is home to several rare and endangered species. Its varied nature, Sámi culture, and fascinating history of gold prospecting make for a truly unique place. This is the largest National Park in Finland, so there is something to see for everyone!
Stay in the Snow Village
Located in Kittila, the Snow Village is a hotel like no other, constructed using freshly fallen snow and ice from the area. Its frosty environment is backlit by whimsical lighting that gives it a warm Christmas glow and a fairy-tale-like feel. Aside from the bedrooms available for overnights stays, there is an ice slide for the kids, an ice bar for the adults, a restaurant that serves delicious Finnish cuisine, and even a wedding chapel!

Best Time to Visit
December during the festive period is the best time to visit Lapland. In December, temperatures can range between 0 to -20 degrees but be prepared for temperatures to drop much further than during a cold spell, so wrap up warm! Lapland’s location means that it normally only gets around 5hrs of ‘grey light’ from 10am-3pm around this time of year, with it being dark the rest of the time.
Passports & Visas
British citizens don’t require a visa to enter Lapland but must hold a valid passport. For the most up-to-date passport and visa information, www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/finland/entry-requirements.
Health & Safety
You should take out comprehensive travel and medical cover while you’re away. Check that your insurance covers you for winter sports if you plan on taking part in any. It’s also worth getting a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) that will entitle you to emergency medical treatment on the same terms as residents. For the latest health and safety information, visit www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/finland/health.
