Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island
First unveiled in 1886, Lady Liberty has stood as a beacon of hope for millions of immigrants arriving at American shores searching for a better life. Liberty and Ellis Island may no longer serve to welcome would-be citizens to the United States; however, they have found a new lease of life, welcoming millions of tourists each year. Visitors to Liberty Island can make the climb into her crown for some of – if not the – finest views of the city’s skyline and waterways. From there, hop on a short ferry ride across to Ellis Island to take in the history of the island’s moving museum that pays tribute to the indelible courage of the immigrants who risked everything to start anew.
Central Park
New York’s most famous and loved recreational space is comprised of 843 acres of meandering meadows, boulder-studded outcrops, a lake, a reservoir, and manicured European gardens. Central Park offers the perfect respite from the city to while away an afternoon far from the hustle and bustle. Rent a boat, indulge in lunch at an idyllic waterside eatery, visit an outdoor theatre or explore one of the park’s many elm-tree lined walkways by foot. Do as much or as little as you want in this inner-city oasis.
Broadway & Times Square
Electrifying billboards and blinding lights: Times Square is NYC’s bright and intoxicating heart. Take it all in before heading off in search of a ticket to the hottest show in town on New York’s ‘dream factory,’ Broadway. Welcome to the ‘crossroads of the world’.
The High-Line
A true testament to the power of urban renewal. Once an unsightly elevated train track that wound its way through run-down neighbourhoods, the High-Line is today one of New York’s proudest monuments in its effort to transform forgotten and disused parts of the city. Today, the eye-catching walkway in the West Side of Manhattan provides innovative and useful space for citizens and visitors to use and enjoy, alike.
Brooklyn
For those who enjoy their food, a visit to Brooklyn is a must. The neighbourhood is littered with everything from retro cocktail bars to artsy eateries serving everything from Michelin-starred gastronomy to New York Italian classics. There is a vibrant nightlife with music halls and beer gardens for those warm summer nights and art collections and museums for those more culturally inclined. Forget Manhattan. Brooklyn is New York’s best-kept secret.
